New Richmond ruck recruit Shaun Hampson is confident his move to Tigerland can ignite his AFL career.
Hampson, who managed just 63 games in seven seasons at Carlton, before being picked up by the Tigers in the league’s recent trade period, feels revitalised by the decision to change clubs.
“It’s my first time at the Club, meeting with all the coaches, and I really like what they have to say. I genuinely feel like they can get the best out of me,” Hampson told ‘Roar Vision’.
“Opportunity’s obviously another big reason why I came, and I feel like I can get that here.
“Obviously, big Ivan is a good ruckman, so I think I can give him a chop-out when he needs it, and pinch-hit forward if they need me to as well . . . I’ll do what the Club needs me to do.
“If they want to start big ‘Ivvy’ forward, then I’ll start in the ruck, and vice-versa. It depends, I guess, who the opponent is and how the match-ups work.”
The 201cm, 104kg, 25-year-old intends focusing on several areas of his game over the pre-season, in the lead-up to his first season in the famous Yellow and Black colors.
“I really want to work hard to improve my marking, contested marking, and goalkicking – big areas for the bigger guys – and they’ve got a lot of strategies in place that they tell me about, to help improve that,” Hampson said.
“The body’s feeling good . . . 100%. I had a bit of a knee issue halfway through last season, but that’s come good and I’m hoping I stay like this throughout pre-season.”
