- He was born in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill, but moved with his family to Queensland when he was three years old.
- He excelled at a variety of sports at school, including athletics, swimming, baseball and soccer.
- He did not start playing Australian Football until 2004.
- He joined Queensland’s Mt Gravatt Football Club in 2005.
- He was a member of the Queensland side, coached by triple Brisbane Lions premiership player Craig McRae, which went through the 2006 under-18 championships undefeated, to claim the Division 2 title.
- He was a Queensland teammate of current Richmond player Ricky Petterd in those under-18 championships.
- He produced some outstanding results at the 2006 AFL Draft Camp, recording 3.00 seconds for the 20-metre sprint (lightning fast for a player his size) and an 86cm vertical jump, which placed him in the top 5% of players tested.
