Talented Richmond rebounding defender Jayden Short has signed a new two-year contract with the Club and will remain a Tiger until at least the end of the 2020 season.
Short was recruited by Richmond with its first pick (No. 11 overall) in the 2015 AFL rookie draft and was subsequently elevated to the Club’s primary list.
The 22-year-old has been a revelation for the Tigers this season with his dash out of defence and superb long kicking.
He is averaging 20.3 disposals, 4.6 rebound-50s, 3.4 inside-50s, has kicked nine goals, and is ranked No. 1 in the competition for total metres gained.
Short has played all 18 games for Richmond so far this season, taking his overall tally to 50, since making his AFL debut in Round 2, 2016 against Collingwood at the MCG.
Richmond General Manager – Football, Neil Balme, said it was a great result for the Club.
“We are really pleased to have Jayden re-commit for a further two years,” Balme said.
“His development has been quite remarkable since he joined Richmond as a rookie at the end of 2014.
“He worked hard for his chance at senior level and has performed well this year.
“Jayden is also a lively character around the Club and I know all our players, coaches and staff will be delighted with this announcement.”
Short’s contract extension comes after the Club announced co-vice captains Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt, as well as small forward Jack Higgins, had also extended their tenures at Richmond.
