Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers will be working on the skill errors which led to Saturday's defeat against the Gold Coast in Cairns.

Hardwick said that as coach, he accepted responsibility for the two-point loss, which was inflicted on the Tigers when Gold Coast midfielder Karmichael Hunt kicked a goal after the siren.

"It's always my responsibility," Hardwick said. "It's my team.

"There are areas that I need to fix. There are areas the players need to fix.

"It's a game of mistakes. The side that makes the least mistakes generally wins.

"We made too many."

Richmond was criticised for its set-up for the last ball-up in the centre square.

The Tigers' best clearance player, Trent Cotchin, was sitting on the bench during that final ball-up.

Hardwick said the midfielders knew how to set up for the last ball-up but they failed to carry out the plan.

He said it was a breakdown in communication that stranded Cotchin on the sidelines for the final two minutes.

"He was at the boundary line and he just came off naturally," Hardwick said.

"You'd expect another player to come off in the last two minutes [and release Cotchin to go back on] but it didn't happen."

Hardwick said the Tigers would hopefully learn from their mistakes.

"We've got to learn from it, get better and get our season back on track," he said.
