There’s a host of reasons why Richmond has risen from the bottom of the ladder, this time last year, to ninth after 10 rounds of the 2011 season, however, in simple terms, the Tigers’ significant improvement can be attributed to greater strike power up forward.

At the completion of Round 10, 2010 (Richmond had just recorded its first win of the season, against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium), the Club’s top five goalkickers were:  Jack Riewoldt 29, Robin Nahas 10, Ben Nason 9, Mitch Morton 6, and Dustin Martin 3.

A year on, the Tigers’ top five goalkickers after 10 rounds are:  Jack Riewoldt 36, Jake King 19, Tyrone Vickery 16, Dustin Martin 14, and Robin Nahas 10.

That’s a total of 95 goals from those five leading goalscorers, compared to 52 from the top five at the same stage last year.

King and Vickery have already kicked more goals to this point in 2011 than every Richmond player, bar Riewoldt, scored for the entire 2010 season, while Martin is only one away from the 15 that Andrew Collins managed, which enabled him to finish second on the Tigers’ goalkicking list.

King has now booted 30 goals in his last 15 games, with at least one goal in each of those appearances.  He has been a multiple goalscorer 11 times in those 15 games, and he’s in equal eighth place on the competition’s goalkicking table.
