More than 50 primary-school children from the Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond urban housing estates have partaken in a 10-week, after-school football program called ‘Roaring Ahead’, facilitated by the Richmond Football Club.
This program has strong links to the AFL Auskick program and is supported by volunteers from Tabcorp and Melbourne Grammar School.
‘Roaring Ahead’ is designed to get children involved in football and fitness in a secure environment that encourages fair play and nurtures learning.
A high adult-to-student ratio often provides these girls and boys with a one-on-one football education, which is vital in fostering their interest in the sport.
Last week, young Richmond defender Alex Rance visited some very excited kids at the Fitzroy housing estate, as part of the program, which has been a roaring success.
It culminates with a unique game-day experience for the children at this Saturday’s big Round 15 clash with Carlton at the MCG.
They will get the chance to show off their skills and new Richmond footy jumpers, as they take part in a pre-match super clinic on the hallowed MCG turf, before heading to the stands to watch all the action of the Tigers v Blues.
