The fluctuating fortunes of modern-day league football were highlighted at the MCG yesterday (Sunday), when Richmond turned a paltry return of 1.2 in the opening quarter into a brilliant blitz of 8.3 in the second term.
As a result, the Tigers, who trailed by four goals at one stage in the first quarter, went to the long break with a 12-point lead, before eventually running out winners by five points in a thrilling battle.
Star Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt spoke to ‘Roar Vision’ post-match about the stirring, sudden form turnaround that enabled the Tigers to seize control of the contest.
Round 7: Riewoldt rises to the occasion
“It’s really good when you can identify what you’re actually doing wrong and rectify it,” Riewoldt said.
“We were able to do that sort of towards the backend of that (first) quarter and, obviously, the address at quarter-time was based around rectifying that and parts of our game.
“So we were very rapt that we could fix that and then score heavily in that second quarter . . .
“It’s riding that wave, and making sure that you really capitalise.
“I suppose in the past we’ve had opportunities where we’ve got control of the game in certain games and then haven’t been able to hit the scoreboard with goals.
Hardwick enthused by Tiger cubs
“Today, I think we kicked maybe five or six goals in-a-row, which is really important.”
The victory over Collingwood broke a frustrating three-game losing streak by Richmond, although Riewoldt was always confident the Tigers had the capacity to get their season back on track.
“Obviously, there’s added pressure outside our four walls. Inside our four walls, we’ve actually been doing a lot right . . . we’ve just been letting ourselves down in certain parts of the game,” Riewoldt said.
“It’s one of those things that, if you continue to believe and continue to stick to it, which I urge our fans too, things will start to go our way.”
