Clever Richmond forward Sam Lloyd is no stranger to sitting on the sidelines in the green sub’s vest.
It’s something he’s done several times already in his 19-game league career, most recently against Essendon at the MCG last Saturday night.
Lloyd was coming off two consecutive three-goal bags (v Gold Coast in Round 21 and Collingwood in Round 22), yet that didn’t prevent him being handed the ‘dreaded’ green vest, and having to wait until late in the third quarter to be summoned into the action.
But Lloyd takes a pragmatic approach to the sub’s role.

“The ‘sub’ vest is an interesting one,” Lloyd said on Channel Nine’s ‘Future Stars’ program.
“As ‘Dimma’ (coach Damien Hardwick) said, someone has to be the sub, and a lot of players are playing good footy down at the Club.
“It’s that hard position where someone has to be it.
“‘Lenno’ (Ben Lennon) played it last week and he played it really well. It was just my turn . . .
“You’ve got to get on and have an impact.”
Lloyd, who has kicked 13 goals in 11 games with Richmond this season, has no qualms whatsoever if he has to wear the green vest during the Tigers’ upcoming finals campaign.
“If I’m sub, I’m sub. If I’m not, I’m not. I just want to be part of it,” he said.
