An exhibition honouring Indigenous footballer and rights activist Sir Pastor Doug Nicholls has been established this week at the Richmond Football Club.
The exhibition, which honours Nicholls’ extraordinary life, is open to the public in the Korin Gamadji Institute, at the ME Centre, throughout Dreamtime week.
Born in 1906, Nicholls was a talented former Fitzroy and Northcote footballer, boxer and runner.
Later in life, he was a pioneer in campaigning for Indigenous rights, and fought hard to bring about understanding and equality.
He carved a successful career in politics, culminating in receiving a knighthood in 1972 and being made Governor of South Australia from 1976-1977.
Richmond and Essendon’s VFL teams vie for the Sir Doug Nicholls Cup each year, and a medal in his honour is the awarded to the player judged as best afield.
The Sir Doug Nicholls exhibition is open to the public from Tuesday, May 26 to Saturday, May 30, from 10am-5pm each day.
