Time is ticking for Indigenous artists to submit their design for the Dreamtime at the ‘G guernsey competition.
The competition closes on Friday, February 8, and the winning artist will have the honour of seeing their design on 22 Richmond players running onto the MCG, at the Dreamtime at the ‘G blockbuster against Essendon.
This is the second year that the Club has held the competition which gives Indigenous artists the opportunity to be uniquely involved in the AFL’s Indigenous Round.
The inaugural Dreamtime guernsey artist, Jirra Harvey said she was “excited by the opportunity”, in the lead-up to the Dreamtime at the ‘G clash in 2011.
Harvey, is an emerging artist and proud Yorta Yorta and Wurundjeri woman, who was raised in Melbourne, on Kulin land.
Her design represented the Murray and Yarra Rivers, as recognition to her people, who are water people.
Harvey also added oval shapes to represent both footballs and shields, symbolising the theme of ‘warrior’.
“Aboriginal football players play such a big role in our community. I know that all the young people that look up to them, see them as contemporary warriors,” said Harvey.
Last year’s winner, Stuart Harradine from the Wimmera region in western Victoria, was inspired by traditional Australian Indigenous linear symbolism, representing topographic features, dreaming pathways, spiritual energies in the landscape, and known boundaries between tribes.
The 2013 winning artist will receive four tickets to Richmond’s Dreamtime at the ‘G function, plus a framed Dreamtime guernsey signed by the Tigers’ new captain, Trent Cotchin and senior coach, Damien Hardwick.
To enter the competition, create your artwork with the theme of ‘Dreamtime’, and send in a photo with your application. A panel ofindependent judges will decide the winner.
