In a special series, richmondfc.com.au is asking Tiger fans to select the best player to have worn each of the most significant guernsey numbers in the Club’s history. To assist in your quest, we have profiled those players who have racked up a minimum of 50 games in the number. The game totals and years listed relate to those played while wearing the specific number, not total Richmond career numbers. Today, we focus on No. 25.
No. 25
Brendon Gale – 244 games, 1990-2001
Provided Richmond with great service throughout his league playing career, initially at centre half-forward and later as a ruckman. Was a strong mark, a long kick, mobile, and read the play extremely well. An important member of the Tigers’ finals campaigns in 1995 and 2001.
Mike Patterson – 152 games, 1959-1969
Tough, strong ruckman, who thrived on mixing it with the opposition. Took on the No. 1 ruck role in Richmond’s line-up for the 1967 Grand Final, when Neville Crowe was suspended after the second semi-final and performed admirably. Was excellent overhead and a fine team man.
Eric Zschech – 102 games, 1930-1935
Classy centreman, who played a key role in the Tigers’ 1932 and 1934 premierships. A superb user of the ball (especially via the drop kick), he provided his teammates further afield with plenty of quality opportunities. Also was a member of Richmond’s 1931 and 1933 Grand Final teams.
Eric Leech – 79 games, 1970-1979
Close-checking, tall backman, who had a wretched run with injuries throughout his time at Tigerland. Was a senior regular when fit due to his defensive skills. Unfortunately, however, managed to play just one senior final in his decade-long career with Richmond.
Jay Schulz – 71 games, 2003-2009
Key forward from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens, who also was used down back at stages by the Tigers. Renowned for his strong marking and accurate kicking for goal. Received an AFL Rising Star nomination in 2004 after an impressive six-goal performance against reigning premier Brisbane.
Troy Chaplin – 67 games, 2013-2015
Experienced tall defender, who has bolstered the Richmond backline since crossing over from Port Adelaide due to his leadership and football nous. Finished third in the 2013 Jack Dyer Medal and sixth in 2014.
