Richmond’s one-point victory over Sydney at the MCG last Saturday night, was the sixth time since the Club entered the league football competition in 1908 that it has defeated the Swans (formerly South Melbourne) by the lowest-possible margin.
It was the ninth one-point result all-up in Richmond v Swans encounters throughout this 108-year period. And, the two teams also have played one drawn match, in Round 3, 1937 at the Lake Oval – 11.15 (81) apiece.
Interestingly, it was exactly 30 years ago to the round (and almost to the day) that the Tigers recorded a one-point win against Sydney at the SCG. In Round 8 of the 1986 season, on May 18, Richmond 16.16 (112) beat Sydney 16.15 (111).
And, it is 50 years since the Tigers scraped in for a one-point victory over South Melbourne at the Lake Oval.
That success, just like the one last Saturday night, came about with a goal after the final siren.
It was the second-last round of the 1966 season and clever goal-sneak Blair Campbell, in his senior debut with Richmond, steered a wobbly torpedo through the big sticks, from about 30 metres out, to turn a five-point deficit on the final siren into a one-point for the Tigers.
Richmond has now been involved in a total of 48 one-point results over the course of its league football history, for 25 wins and 23 losses.
