Retired Richmond defender Troy Chaplin is adamant the Tigers are well placed to rapidly rebound from a disappointing 2016 season that’s followed three consecutive finals campaigns.
“The future’s going to be very good, despite what some people think . . . I think our group’s in a great position,” Chaplin, who announced his playing retirement from AFL football earlier this week, said on SEN.
“Look, it’s been a disappointing year, there’s no doubt about that. We can’t shy away from the fact we haven’t performed as well as what we would have liked compared to the last few years.
“But what we’ve been able to do, is find some younger guys coming through – the likes of Oleg Markov, Jayden Short . . . ‘Beany’s’ (Liam McBean) got an opportunity the last couple of weeks.
“We’ve got some other guys at VFL level who can play the game as well . . . They’re going to get an opportunity to see how they go at the elite level.
“Our senior players are great players that perform well week in, week out. It’s that second tier group we’re really looking to get the improvement from and play well on a weekly basis. And I think we’ve seen that this year.
“‘Grigga’s’ (Shaun Grigg) had a great year, probably his best year since he’s been at the Club. And Shaun Hampson’s really grown into the ruck role this year.
“So, despite the win/loss record, I think we just need to add a little bit to the list, and we’re going to be alright.”
