The successful comeback to senior league football of talented midfielder, Reece Conca, was a highlight of Richmond’s 17-point win against Gold Coast at the MCG yesterday (Sunday).
Conca, in his first appearance for the Tigers’ senior side thisseason, and just his fourth over the past couple of years, finished with 22 disposals, including nine contested possessions and four inside-50s, plus six tackles.
He was one of the catalysts in Richmond’s stirring last-quarter fightback, picking up 12 disposals and generating some important run for the Tigers, as they slammed on 8.3 to 4.0 to clinch their fifth win of the season.
Post-match, Conca told ‘Roar Vision’ how he felt to finally taste senior action again, following a frustrating stint on the sidelines with a severe hamstring injury.
“It was amazing. It’s obviously been a bit of a tough trot lately, but it’s all behind me and great to get a win tonight,” Conca told ‘Roar Vision’ in the rooms post-game on Sunday.
The 23-year-old explained how he had reverted back to his customary midfield role after being used in defence during the pre-season period.
“I was probably more half-back earlier in the year and I’ve slotted more midfield, bit of wing, the last few weeks (at VFL level and now in the AFL) . . . Really enjoying the time on-ball,” Conca said.
“Contested ball and tackles are a real focus at the moment, and I’m putting my foot forward in that aspect of the game . . . I’ve been really working on it.
“If they need me down back . . . I played a little bit (there) in the last quarter (against the Suns). So, just wherever they need me, really.”
