Valuable, versatile Richmond defender Nathan Broad is on an incredible journey at the game’s highest level.
Since being taken by the Tigers with their third pick (No. 67 overall) in the 2015 AFL national draft, as a mature-age recruit from WAFL club Swan Districts, Broad has played a total of 54 games for 44 wins and 10 losses.
That equates to a winning strike-rate of 81.4 percent, which is the best among all current AFL players who have played 50 games or more.
And, most importantly, included among those 44 wins that Broad has been involved with at Tigerland are the glorious 2017 and 2019 Grand Final triumphs.
Broad’s 2017 premiership teammate Jack Graham, who missed the 2019 Grand Final victory over Greater Western Sydney because of a shoulder injury, has a slightly higher winning strike-rate in his AFL career of 82.05 percent, but he’s yet to reach the 50-game milestone, having made only 39 appearances at senior level with Richmond.
A talented trio of Tiger recruits from rival league clubs – Dion Prestia, Toby Nankervis and Josh Caddy – also figure prominently on the winning strike-rate list.
Prestia, who won this year’s Jack Dyer Medal, is going at 78.3 percent (47 wins from 60 games at Richmond), it’s 76.2 percent for Nankervis (45 wins from 59 games), while Caddy is at 75.8 percent (47 wins from 62 games).
Two young, first-time premiership Tigers – Shai Bolton and Liam Baker – have even better winning strike-rates than the aforementioned threesome, but are yet to reach the 50-game mark in AFL ranks.
Bolton is at 78.5 percent after 28 games and Baker is at 81.8 percent 22 games into his league football career.
