It is a measure of Anthony Miles’ maturity, professionalism and determination to succeed that he wasn’t entirely satisfied with his overall in-put throughout the 2015 season.
That’s despite finishing fourth in Richmond’s Best and Fairest award, in what was just his second season at the Club.
The tenacious ‘ball-magnet’ midfielder played all 23 games for the Tigers during the season, averaging 23.6 disposals and 11.5 contested possessions per match.
He was ranked equal 12th in the competition for clearances and 13th in contested possessions.
And, among his Tigerland teammates, Miles was ranked No. 1 in handballs, clearances, centre clearances, stoppages, second for contested possessions, inside-50s and tackles, third in total disposals and fifth for kicks.
They are impressive numbers indeed, but the 23-year-old remains typically level-headed.
“I felt my season was pretty similar to the side . . . I was a little bit inconsistent at times,” Miles told ‘Roar Vision’.
“It was my first full season of AFL, so that was another challenge for me, to get my body right, week in, week out.
“I certainly think I’ll be better for this year, and hopefully I can continue to improve going forward.”
As part of that improvement, Miles is aiming to hit the scoreboard more frequently next season.
“I’d like to be able to get forward and kick more goals,” he said.
“If we’ve got a multiple spread of goalkickers, it’s only going to help our side even more.
“So, probably the next step for me is to get forward and get on the outside a little bit more.”
Miles also wants to work on further improvements in his role as an inside midfielder.
“It’s a role that I’ve done for a Iittle while and I enjoy,” he said.
“We’ve got some really good inside ‘mids’ around, which helps as well . . . ‘Cotchy’ (Trent Cotchin) and Dustin (Martin) are two great blokes to learn off for me.
“I want to continue to learn off them and hone my craft.”
