Richmond assistant coach Ben Rutten provides ‘Roar Vision’ with a snapshot of Greater Western Sydney’s key attributes ahead of this Sunday’s big clash at the MCG.
Patton’s prowess in attack
“He’s a really important player for them . . . He’s been in good form (15 goals in the past four games). (Alex) Rance is obviously going to spend some time on him, and we’ll back ‘Rancey’ in with that. Obviously limiting his supply’s going to be as important as anything. We’ve got some versatility with our defence (Astbury, Grimes and co.). Rance is obviously a great player, but we’re not solely relying on him.”
Elite transition from their defence
“They’ve got some good playmakers back there . . . Wilson’s really good off half-back and Shaw gets them up as well. They start linking up with guys like Scully and Whitfield . . . It’s that connection between their half-backs and also their running midfielders . . . Trying to eliminate that’s going to be a key to their back-half transitions.”
No. 1 clearance side in the competition
“’Mummy’ (Shane Mumford) does a lot of the heavy lifting in there (the midfield) for them . . . Ward and Shiel are great when the ball gets outside, but they’re good inside the contest as well. They’ve got a good balance between inside and outside. So the inside battle/contested ball stuff’s going to be important, as it always is.”
Greene’s potency up forward
“He’s a really important player to them, and he’s got a bit of niggle in him as well. But he’s got some good support around him . . .”
Who goes to Greene?
“We’ve got ‘Grimesy’ (Dylan Grimes), Nick Vlastuin’s back in the team, and Brandon Ellis has been doing some good stuff as well . . .”
