The Richmond selectors will be burning the midnight oil this week, as they try to figure out the Tigers’ best line-up to tackle the business end of season 2017.
There are several players in Richmond’s VFL team knocking strongly on the door for senior selection – led by Sam Lloyd and Anthony Miles.
Lloyd had nearly 50 disposals and kicked four goals in the 70-point win by the Tiger ‘twos’ against Sandringham last Sunday, while Miles had a ‘lazy’ 45.
Experienced trio Ben Griffiths, Reece Conca and Steven Morris all returned to the playing field with the VFL side, following their respective stints on the sidelines through injury, while ruckman Shaun Hampson had his second game back after recovering from a severe back complaint.
Throw in talented young players such as Jayden Short, Corey Ellis, Connor Menadue, Shai Bolton, Tyson Stengle and Ivan Soldo, plus the imminent return from a minor hamstring injury of key mature-age midfielder Josh Caddy and you can understand why the Richmond selection meetings are likely to drag on for quite some time in the foreseeable future.
“Our VFL boys are playing some great footy, so we’ve got some selection decisions to make going forward,” said Tigers coach Damien Hardwick.
“Shaun (Hampson) was very good at VFL level, (Ivan) Soldo’s a young, learning type of ruckman, Ben Griffiths got through another game.
“Do we go with the one ruck? Do we need two?
“It might be dependent on the opposition.
“But they’re good problems to have at the moment.”
