Health and wellbeing is a critical component of high performing teams and organisations. As part of Richmond's commitment to this, the Club conducted Mental Health First Aid Training for its players, coaches and staff during the pre-season.
Facilitated by Mental Health Education Group (MHEG), on completion of the course participants are able to become accredited Mental Health First Aid Officers.
The course, which runs over four sessions, provides an overview of the most common mental health concerns. It also empowers participants to recognise, assist and refer people around them who may be struggling with a mental health issue.
Richmond is committed to fostering an environment that supports its people’s health and wellbeing – in particular mental health and wellbeing.
The engaging and hands-on course breaks down the stigma often attached with mental illness and provides participants with the tools to support people with mental health problems.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, General Manager – Football Neil Balme, senior players and football and administration staff were among the first group of Club employees to complete the course.
"Sporting clubs are high-pressure environments and we want to ensure that our workplace is inclusive and supportive,” Balme said.
“This course has educated our players, coaches and staff about the stigma associated with mental health and helped empower them to provide assistance and support.”
MHEG Director and Facilitator, David Bastian, said mental health was a prominent issue in society, which extends to sporting clubs and organisations.
“Mental health and wellbeing is an increasingly relevant and necessary consideration for all organisations," Bastian said.
"The course we facilitated is primarily designed to improve mental health literacy, reduce stigma and increase proactive, helping behaviors.
"Many organisations are aware of the need to have the mental health discussion, but are unsure how to approach it.
"We were more than happy to assist Richmond in achieving the positive results they are seeking and are proud to have played a part in the Club's mental health and wellbeing strategy.”
