Dual West Coast premiership key defender Glen Jakovich is another astute football person who believes Richmond star Alex Rance’s superb form throughout the past few seasons has him closing in on the title of the game’s best-ever full-back.
Last week, Tigers assistant coach and three-time Brisbane premiership key defender Justin Leppitsch publicly lauded Rance and claimed he was “in the conversation” for the greatest-of-all-time status as a full-back.
Although Jakovich currently rates triple Geelong premiership full-back Matthew Scarlett as his No. 1, he regards Rance as capable of eventually taking the title.
“He’s certainly getting there, no doubting that,” Jakovich said on ‘SEN’.
“He’s become an even better player in a much better side now they have experienced greatness.
“When you look at Justin Leppitsch, he became a better player in a great side. You exert more responsibility, more leadership, you play big pressure moments and more finals, and you elevate your own skill-sets.
“His (Rance’s) finals series was epic and he was in the discussion for a Norm Smith on Grand Final day, so he’s got better as the team’s got better.
“When I watch Alex now, I think he has a great respect and appreciation for the game. He wants to get better . . . he looks like a true footballer.”
