Damien Hardwick has become the first ‘outsider’ to coach Richmond to a premiership in the Club’s 109-year league football history.

Hardwick is the only one of Richmond’s seven league premiership coaches not to have previously played for the Tigers.

He was a premiership player with Essendon and Port Adelaide, before embarking on his coaching career, as an assistant to Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn.

Since taking the coaching reins at Richmond, Hardwick has coached the Tigers in 180 games, for 89 wins, 85 losses and two draws, which is a success strike rate of 51.1 percent.

Only Tigerland ‘Immortals’ Jack Dyer and Tommy Hafey have had more games as Richmond’s coach than Hardwick.

Dyer coached the Tigers in 222 games, while Hafey is the Club’s coaching record-holder, with 248 games.

1932 – Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes (120 games as a Richmond player, including the 1920 and 1921 premierships).

1934 – Percy Bentley (263 games as a Richmond player, including the 1932 and 1934 premierships).

1943 – Jack Dyer (312 games as a Richmond player, including the 1934 and 1943 premierships).

1967, 1969, 1973 and 1974 – Tommy Hafey (67 games as a Richmond player).

1980 – Tony Jewell (80 games as a Richmond player, including the 1967 premiership).

2017 – Damien Hardwick (153 games as an Essendon player, including the 2000 premiership and 54 games as a Port Adelaide player, including the 2004 premiership).
