Richmond will continue to take a calculated approach into the remaining couple of weeks of the AFL’s trade period, in keeping with its overall recruiting methodology during this time.

The Tigers were successful in snaring both their targets - Chris Knights (Adelaide) and Troy Chaplin (Port Adelaide) - in the first week of the league’s inaugural free agency period, but have since been quiet, by design.

“We have a philosophy during the trade period that if we haven’t rated them (rival clubs’ players), or we haven’t thrown them up in our planning before we go to trade week, then we’re very reluctant to go ahead with the trade to bring a player in,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron on the “Tiger Trade Central” panel show.

“We don’t rule it out, obviously, because a surprise may get thrown up that will suit us during trade week.

“But, in general, our philosophy is, if we haven’t planned for it, then we steer away.”

Cameron doesn’t mind admitting the Tigers have taken a leaf out of the Sydney Swans’ recruiting strategy book . . .

“We’ve looked at Sydney in building this model,” he said.

“Sydney’s been outstanding in bringing in tried players that will suit their style of play, and they’ve done it because they’ve resourced it properly and decided that’s how they need to build their list.

“They won the premiership, they’re the best at it, so, unashamedly, we’ve copied some of their systems.”
