Brisbane’s final score of 2.5 (17) in last Saturday’s clash with Richmond was the lowest total against the Tigers in 110 years.
You have to go all the way back to Round 15 of the 1910 season for what is the lowest-ever score recorded against Richmond in league football history.
In that match at Punt Road, the Tigers restricted St Kilda to just 1.10 (16) and scored 8.6 themselves to win by 38 points.
Last Saturday’s Round 4 encounter also was the first time in 45 years that Richmond had kept its opposition goalless in the first half.
Back in Round 10, 1973, South Melbourne managed just three behinds to half-time of the match played at the Lake Oval.
There have now been 13 occasions all-up in the AFL/VFL competition, where the Tigers have held their opponents goalless up to the half-time break.
In chronological order, they are:
- Round 15, 1910 v St Kilda, Punt Road, 0.5.
- Round 6, 1914 v University, MCG – 0.4.
- Round 9, 1917 v Fitzroy, Punt Road – 0.6.

There were several other interesting statistical factors to emerge from Saturday’s game . . .
- Brisbane’s total of 2.5 (17) equalled the lowest ever score in Brisbane Lions/Bears history. In Round 12, 1988 v Hawthorn at Princes Park, they also finished with 2.5 (17).
- That score of 2.5 (17) also is the lowest by any team at the MCG since South Melbourne’s 1.11 (17) in Round 6, 1962 v Melbourne.
- It’s the lowest score against Richmond at the MCG in league football history.
- And it’s the lowest score overall in the AFL competition since Fremantle’s 1.7 (13) in Round 15, 2009 v Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.
- Richmond’s 93-point win was its biggest at the MCG since Round 21, 1996, when it beat Fitzroy by 151 points.
It’s the Tigers’ greatest winning margin against Brisbane, eclipsing the previous best of 82 points.
