Powerful Richmond forward Josh Caddy’s four-goal haul against Essendon at the MCG last Friday night took his season’s tally to 43, which is more than double anything he’d previously scored in a year at AFL level.
Caddy booted 21 goals in his final season for Geelong in 2016 and followed up with 21 again at his new football home with the Tigers last year.
This season, he’s booted four goals on five occasions, plus an AFL career-high six against St Kilda in Round 10 at the MCG.
VIDEO: Caddy just happy to help
It was Caddy’s significant impact during the third quarter of Friday night’s clash with the Bombers that sparked Richmond.
He rose high to drag down two huge marks and converted both into goals to provide the Tigers with a decisive advantage in the match.
With 17 disposals, five marks (four of them inside 50), six score involvements and four goals, Caddy played a major role in Richmond’s eight-point win, and further pressed his claims for selection in the 2018 All-Australian team.
“He’s that really kind of awkward size forward. He can play in the air and on the ground he’s quite damaging as well,” Caddy’s Tiger teammate Dylan Grimes told K Rock radio during a post-game interview.
“All year, he’s just needed a few opportunities a game, and he seems to pop his head up and kick that three or four goals regularly . . .
“He’s having a great year and I think to have a player right next to him – Jack (Riewoldt) – playing so well, and have two forwards firing at the same time, it’s a real strength for us.”
