RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has been handed a suspended $5000 fine for comments made toward an emergency umpire.

The incident happened in the interchange bench area just before three-quarter time of the Tigers' loss to Essendon last Saturday night.

Hardwick has since personally apologised to the umpire.

The fine will be suspended for the next three years, and activated if Hardwick commits another offence.

"Damien Hardwick personally acknowledged the comments made and that he regretted doing so, and this was taken into account, while acknowledging umpires must not be subject to such approaches through the course of a game,” said AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson.
