Premiership players Toby Nankervis and Nathan Broad have recognised the influence of the side’s younger players and their ability to breathe energy into the game.
Richmond recorded its second win of the season by defeating the Gold Coast Suns in a hard-fought 11-point victory on Saturday night in front of the Tiger Army.
With outstanding efforts displayed across all three areas of the field, Richmond’s leaders acknowledged the work of the young Tiger Cubs in not only getting them across the line on Saturday, but also for their strong start across the early portion of the campaign.
“I was just proud to be honest,” Broad told ABC radio post-game.
“As a leader, I’m just proud to see these kids getting speed out of the back, that’s how we want to play, and that third quarter was just awesome to see it come to fruition.
“You want to see growth, and we are getting better every day, and we want a system and game plan where our fans can see that we are getting better every week.”
Captain Nankervis gave praise to exciting young forward Seth Campbell, who finished the game with 15 disposals and two goals.
“He has been unbelievable and just brings so much energy on and off the field,” Nankervis said on 3AW.
“Every week in the way he trains and the way he wants to get better is awesome, and he has been able to translate that on the field.
“The way he sets up the ground and his defensive pressure is why he is playing such a well-rounded game at the moment.”
The skipper also gave his admiration for number one draft pick, Sam Lalor, who returned against the Suns, having missed the week prior against Fremantle.
Lalor had an instant impact, recording 16 disposals, two clearances and a goal at Marvel Stadium.
“He had so much time with the ball, and he embraces the contact, so he is able to fight through tackles, and he is super clean with his first touch,” Nankervis said.
“It’s funny to think he has only played four or five games. He looks like he has played 150.
“He really gets the game as well, structurally he sets the guys up, which is pretty impressive for someone who has just been in the system for under 12 months.”
Richmond will now turn its focus to Melbourne ahead of the traditional Anzac Day Eve blockbuster at the MCG on Thursday night.
