Richmond great Matthew Richardson is delighted that star Tiger Noah Balta has made a long-term commitment to the Club.

The Tigers announced last week Balta had signed a seven-year contract extension, keeping him at Punt Road until at least the end of the 2032 season.

Richardson has a high regard for Balta’s playing ability and believes his importance within Richmond’s line-up is only going to increase.

Balta, who turns 25 next week (October 23), has played 104 senior games with the Club and was a member of the 2020 premiership team.

“This basically makes him a Tiger for life, which is fantastic news,” Richardson said.”

“Key-position talent is hard to find, so it was important with his peak years coming up that he was locked away long term.

“With Tom Lynch’s return to the line-up in 2025, I think that Balta will be settled back into a key- defensive post.

“While he can play anywhere, I believe his best position is back. If we can settle him into that role again, he really can be one of the best key defenders in the competition. He could also finish his career in the top echelon of Richmond key defenders of all time.

“His athleticism, anticipation, pace and ability to win the ball back in the air and on the ground are first class. And I love the way he doesn’t get preoccupied with his direct opponent and just backs himself to win the ball back.

“He also has the strength to take contested intercept marks, which are invaluable.

“With his capacity to win the ball back, he can quickly clear the ball out of the backline and turn defence into attack with his booming right-foot kick. Metres gained are so important in today’s game, and he does that on a consistent basis.

“Overall, he is very well-equipped to play on the best tall forwards in the competition.

“And I admire his attitude and want to be part of Richmond’s regeneration. He really is turning himself into a leader at the Club.”
