AFLW Physical High Manager Eliza Morrison said the aim was for the midfielder to be available for Round 2.
"After managing soreness in Season 8, Sarah had hamstring surgery in the off-season. She has been back in training for a few weeks now with exposure to match sim and is tracking very well," Morrison said.
"She still has some general soreness through her back and hamstring, so will remain in Melbourne."
Morrison said recently-signed replacement Tamara Luke had "hit the ground running" as she appropriately increases her training loads.
"We are really happy with her introduction to training, but for the longevity of the season we will continue to build her loads through training for a couple more weeks before putting her up for selection," Morrison said.
Richmond will name its Round 1 line-up on Thursday at 6.20pm.
Montana ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Richmond's match simulation against the Western Bulldogs. She has undergone a knee reconstruction and will miss the entire 2024 AFLW season.
