Toby Nankervis’ best result in Richmond’s Best and Fairest award is equal eighth in 2022, but that’s set to change this year.
The Tigers captain and triple premiership ruckman has been a consistent performer throughout the 2024 season but he’s taken his game to an extremely high level in the past couple of games.
In the Round 16 clash with Carlton at the MCG, Nankervis had 17 disposals, 11 contested possessions, three tackles, four inside-50s, nine clearances, 43 hit-outs, 318 metres gained and kicked a goal.
Then, in last Saturday night’s match against Fremantle at Optus Stadium, he finished with an equal team-high 26 disposals, a game-high and AFL career-high 21 contested possessions, four marks, three inside-50s, a game-high 11 clearances, an equal game-high five centre clearances, one goal, six score involvements, equal team-high seven tackles, 36 hit-outs and 297 metres gained.
It's been a tough season for the Tigers, but Nankervis certainly can hold his head high.
He has led from the front in trademark strong and bold style, totally justifying the Club’s decision to make him sole captain this season.
By season’s end, Nankervis may well have a Jack Dyer Medal to go with the other impressive honours he’s achieved throughout his time at Tigerland.
