Shai Bolton lit up Norwood Oval yesterday with one of the most dazzling displays of his 118-game AFL career with Richmond.
The dual premiership Tiger excitement machine thrilled the travelling Yellow and Black barrackers to the Gather Round match against St Kilda, as well as the local fans, with his vast array of exquisite football skills.
Bolton had 19 disposals, 10 contested possessions, took a team-high nine marks, including five inside 50 and kicked a game-high and equal AFL career-high four goals out of Richmond’s total of nine for the game. And they were terrific, team-lifting goals, too.
Unfortunately, Richmond couldn’t quite get over the line, going down by seven points, but Bolton’s brilliance throughout the contest would have somewhat softened the blow for the Tiger Army.
Having gained All-Australian selection for the first time in 2022, Bolton, at this early stage of the 2024 season, appears on track for another prestigious AA blazer.
He is averaging 18.4 disposals. 8.2 contested possessions, 4.4 marks, 3.0 clearances, 4.6 inside-50s, 2.2 goals (11 in total), 6.6 score involvements and 423.2 metres gained per match.
As impressive as those numbers are, they don’t do full justice to the huge on-field impact Bolton has for the Tigers, and just how difficult a match-up he is for opposition teams.
Bolton's sensational showing on Sunday earned him a perfect score of 10 from the coaches in the AFLCA Champion Player award.
Also featuring in the coaches' votes was Dustin Martin, who was dominant on return with 20 disposals in the first half alone.
He finished the clash with 30 disposals, eight marks, six inside-50s and three tackles, earning four votes.
Rounding out the coaches' votes was midfielder Tim Taranto, who polled one vote after an impressive display in which he amassed 28 disposals, seven tackles and six inside-50s.
