Tim Taranto is relishing taking on more responsibility within Richmond’s line-up.
The 26-year-old star midfielder and reigning Jack Dyer Medallist played a pivotal role for the undermanned Tigers in their stirring victory over Sydney at the MCG yesterday.
He finished the match with a game-high 35 disposals, 11 contested possessions, six marks, six inside-50s, a game-high eight clearances, five rebound-50s, one goal, nine score involvements, an equal team-high six tackles and 586 metres gained.
With so many inexperienced players throughout Richmond’s team at the moment, Taranto has taken it upon himself to act as a mentor to them, particularly those in the midfield.
“I’m trying to be a bit more of a leader out there and take control of the young midfield,” Taranto said in a post-game interview with Fox Footy.
“I feel like I’m transitioning from that kind of younger player to now I’m a senior head.
“It’s a new role and I’m excited to keep learning from it.”
Taranto was rewarded for his top-class effort with eight votes from the coaches in the AFLCA Champion Player award.
He was joined by Nick Vlastuin and Shai Bolton, who also polled eight apiece.
Vlastuin continued his sensational start to the season, recording 29 disposals, 13 marks and 15 intercepts at 100 per cent disposals efficiency in another outstanding defensive effort.
Livewire Bolton booted two goals to go with his 25 touches and five marks in an impressive display.
Rounding out the coaches' votes was Daniel Rioli, who was a key contributor in the win with 27 disposals, four marks and four tackles.
