Greg Tivendale was one of the success stories of the AFL's rookie list system.
He was recruited by Richmond from Rythdale-Officer Cardinia football club/Gippsland Power TAC Cup team and started on the rookie list at Tigerland before being promoted to the senior list in 1998.
Late that season – Round 20, 1998 – he made his AFL debut with the Tigers against West Coast at Domain Stadium.
It wasn’t until 2000, however, that Tivendale established himself as a permanent member of Richmond’s line-up, predominantly as a wingman.
Tivendale had a remarkable run of 135 consecutive games, generating considerable drive for the Tigers throughout with his run-and-carry and spearing left-foot kicks.
His best season of AFL football was in 2003, when he averaged 19.1 disposals per match and finished third in the Jack Dyer Medal.
That season, he also scored a career-high four goals against Fremantle at Domain Stadium in Round 18,
The following year, he racked up a career-high 32 disposals against Geelong at Marvel Stadium in Round 4.
Overall, Tivendale played 188 games and kicked 125 goals in a decade-long career with Richmond from 1998-2008. He averaged 16.2 disposals, 3.8 marks and 3.7 inside-50s per game.
Tivendale gave himself the best possible chance of succeeding at the game’s highest level through his first-class work ethic and professional approach. He always was well prepared to give his all for the Yellow and Black cause.
As a person of excellent character, with a strong team-first attitude, he also was extremely popular among his teammates.
