Richmond is proud to announce that together with Collingwood, the inaugural Charity Shield game delivered 120,000 meals for Foodbank Victoria.
The Tigers’ AAMI Community Series match against Collingwood, played at Ikon Park, sold 11,000 tickets, with sales proceeds and gameday fundraising helping to feed Victorians in need.
Both clubs also supported various marketing activities for Foodbank Victoria to help raise awareness for the important charity.
Richmond Chief Marketing Officer Simon Matthews said the success of the inaugural Charity Shield meant it could find a place in the annual football calendar.
“The game has a responsibility to give back to the community, and the Charity Shield provides Richmond and Collingwood the opportunity to support those doing it tough,” he said.
“Supporters of both clubs rallied behind this concept and ultimately provided 120,000 meals to those in need. We thank them for the wonderful support they provided.”
“There is clearly a place for this game, and we look forward to growing it further into the future.”
Foodbank CEO Dave McNamara lauded the achievement.
“A Tuesday night, still over 30 degrees and playing in enemy territory – but over 10,000 footy fans bought tickets to Ikon Park to watch an epic pre-season battle between the mighty Tiges and the reigning Pies,” he added.
“We were lucky enough to be in the thick of it. We can’t thank Richmond Football Club enough for driving this incredible Charity Shield initiative.
“Tens of thousands of meals will now be on the tables of Victorians struggling to get by. We are humbled and energised – and ready to go around again next year.”
