Richmond continues to strengthen its partnership with the Cardinia Shire following the success of Saturday’s second-round NAB Challenge match in Beaconsfield.
The Tigers defeated Hawthorn in front of a crowd of 6,384 at Holm Park Recreation Reserve, prompting Cardinia Shire Mayor, Councillor Jodie Owen, to say it was the “perfect partnership”.
“We are so proud at Cardinia to have (the) Richmond Football Club here,” Cr Owen said prior to Saturday's opening bounce.
“Today is going to be massive for the area, for the local retailers, but also to show the community that when Richmond formed a partnership with Cardinia Shire that they’ve really given 150 per cent."
Richmond has partnerships with both the Cardinia Shire Council and local land developers Parklea to bring the community together using football, through various programs, events and community engagement initiatives.
“Since working with the Richmond Football Club I’ve attended things with Brendon Gale for White Ribbon Day, the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, (and) you’ve got your Tiger Paw program, whereby that’s teaching young ones health and wellbeing,” Cr Owen said.
“There’s business workshops we’ve done with Richmond which has really helped our businesses grow.
“For us, it’s the perfect partnership.
“Today is the start of a lot of better things and I think as the year goes on the community will see that this partnership is strong, it’s going to grow, and it’s going to benefit both of us.”
Cr Owen’s sentiments were echoed by Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt, who starred in his first hit-out of the year.
Riewoldt booted two majors and notched up 10 marks in a strong performance against the Hawks.
“It was a great hit-out, the deck was fantastic and it’s great to be out in the Shire of Cardinia, obviously a sponsor of our football club and proud to see lots of supporters in yellow and black out here today,” Riewoldt told Fox Footy after the win.
