To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Tigers’ 1969 premiership, richmondfc.com.au is regularly transporting Yellow and Black barrackers back in time throughout this year to follow the Punt Road path to that fabulous flag triumph. Today we take a look at an article in ‘The Age’ newspaper of March 17, 1969, which reviewed Richmond’s intra-club practice match the previous day.

“Half-forward flanker Eric Moore, for the second week in succession, was the best player in Richmond’s main practice match yesterday.

Moore marked brilliantly, used his strength well and capped a fine performance with eight goals from nine shots.

His opponents were Ed Murphy in the first half, and Richmond captain, Roger Dean, in the second.

Francis Bourke was at his best on the wing, with strong marking, lots of pace and good disposal.

But his opponent, John Perry, was far from disgraced, and his clash with Bourke was one of the highlights of the game.

Although under strong pressure from Graham Burgin, Wayne Judd played well at centre half-forward.

Graham Robbins, a recruit rover from Catani in West Gippsland, gave an impressive display and kicked five goals.

A pleasing feature of the high standard game was the return to form of half-back Mike Perry and ruckman John Ronaldson.

Bill Barrot did well in the centre against Dick Clay, Don Davenport was noticeable on a half-forward flank and Milton Scott, a follower from Burnie, Tasmania, played a good game.”
