Tim Taranto has polled the second most Brownlow Medal votes by a player in his debut season at Richmond.
The star midfielder, recruited by the Tigers from Greater Western Sydney in last year’s AFL trade period, received 19 votes at last night’s Brownlow count.
Only champion centreman Ian Stewart, who won the Brownlow Medal in his debut season at Richmond in 1971, polled more votes.
Stewart, a dual Brownlow Medallist with St Kilda before joining the Tigers, captured the game’s most prestigious individual award in 1971 with 21 votes.
Taranto was a slow burn in last night’s count with only four votes after Round 10.
But he had a perfect run from Round 11-14, polling the maximum three votes as best-on-ground in all those four games.
He picked up a further three votes in Round 19 to take his total to 19, which was the most by a Richmond player on the night – five ahead of Shai Bolton with 14.
Here are Taranto’s statistical numbers in his three-vote Brownlow games this season:
Round 11 v Port Adelaide, MCG: 33 disposals, 12 contested possessions, six marks, seven clearances, four inside-50s, four rebound-50s, four goals, eight score involvements, seven tackles, 422 metres gained.
