In a special series, richmondfc.com.au is asking Tiger fans to select the best player to have worn each of the most significant guernsey numbers in the Club’s history. To assist in your quest, we have profiled those players who have racked up a minimum of 50 games in the number. The game totals and years listed relate to those played while wearing the specific number, not total Richmond career numbers. We complete the series with a look at No. 40.
No. 40
Billy Brown – 130 games, 1963-1971
Started off at Richmond as a wingman and was successful in that position before being moved into a roving role. He subsequently had a fine playing career with the Tigers, providing excellent back-up for brilliant first rover Kevin Bartlett. Was speedy, elusive, tenacious, courageous and had great goal sense. Won Richmond’s Best First Year Player award in 1963 and finished runner-up in the Club’s Best and Fairest in 1964. Went on to be a valuable member of the Tigers’ 1967 and 1969 premiership sides.
Kelvin Moore – 87 games, 2004-2012
Versatile defender whose league career with Richmond, unfortunately, was decimated due to injury problems. Displayed enormous courage, mental toughness and commitment to fight his way back into Richmond’s senior side after nearly two years on the sidelines with a severe hip complaint, which required several operations. Was an automatic inclusion in the Tigers’ line-up when fit. Had good pace, defensive ‘smarts’, and could play on tall or small forwards.
Stephen James – 77 games, 1985-1990
Talented left-foot forward, who worked his way through the ranks at Tigerland. Was the leading goalkicker in the under 19s competition in 1984 with 101 goals. Kicked 49 goals in his debut season with Richmond’s senior side in 1985. Played with plenty of energy and excitement as a forward, before spending the latter part of his career with Richmond as a rebounding defender.
Merv Keane – 72 games, 1972-1975
Exceedingly reliable performer for Richmond, initially as a defender and later in an on-ball role. Consistently curbed dangerous opposition players due to his exemplary disciplined approach to the task at hand, which ensured he always put the team ahead of any personal accolades. Also possessed an impressive football skills set. Was a fine mark, good kick and had excellent poise. A key member of three premiership sides with the Tigers – in 1973, 1974 and 1980. Named on a half-back flank in Richmond’s Team of the Century and is a Club Hall of Fame inductee.
