A changed mindset has helped Richmond’s star spearhead Jack Riewoldt become a more team-oriented player in season 2013.
While Riewoldt is still kicking his fair share of goals – 50 up to the end of Round 18 – he’s also dishing up plenty of scoring opportunities for teammates.
He’s currently ranked No. 1 at Richmond, and equal No. 15 in the entire competition for goal assists.
And, he’s now comfortable with the fact that he doesn’t have to be kicking a bag of goals each week, as long as the team is consistently hitting the scoreboard.
“I’ve been getting double-teamed a fair bit, but that sort of scenario creates opportunities for other players to bob up and kick goals,” he said on SEN.
“Sometimes – and I think ‘Richo’ (Matthew Richardson) probably went through the same thing – you try so hard to win the game by yourself.
“You’re just giving your all and you think the only way you can help the side is by kicking goals, because you’re the full-forward.
“But there’s so many different ways of bettering the football club.
“I’ve played a lot up the ground this year, but I was a little bit more at home in the second half on the weekend (against the Sydney Swans) and got on the end of a couple.
“It’s however Damien (Hardwick) sees the role, and we have really good discussions about who to play at full-forward.
“I just try and do that to the best of my ability.”
