Liam Baker further enhanced his reputation as Richmond’s Mr Fixit by kicking the winning goal in yesterday’s thrilling clash with Hawthorn at the MCG.
Trailing by five goals at three-quarter time, the Tigers stormed home and with just over one minute remaining in the contest, Baker, who had drifted forward after being moved back during the game, swooped on the ball that had been fisted forward by Hawk Will Day and snapped a superb left-foot goal to put them one point ahead.
The 25-year-old Tiger dual premiership hero played a significant role in the team’s victory by the barest possible margin, apart from his match-winning goal.
He finished the match with 20 disposals, six contested possessions, four marks, four rebound-50s, four intercepts, an equal AFL career-high two goals, seven score involvements and 367 metres gained.
It was the seventh time in his 105-game career at Tigerland that Baker has kicked two goals.
In a post-match interview with Richmond Media, Baker provided a typically modest description of his winning goal against the Hawks.
“We just had to roll numbers forward and I found myself inside 50 off the half-backline and I got lucky . . . the ball sat in my lap,” he said.
“Apparently, I burnt a few blokes on the outside, but lucky enough that it snuck through, otherwise I would have been hearing about that one. But yeah, happy days.”
Baker, who finished second in the 2021 Jack Dyer Medal and fourth last year, is enjoying another fine season in 2023.
He is averaging a career-high 20.5 disposals, 7.2 contested possessions, 3.8 marks, 3.0 rebound-50s, a career-high 5.3 score involvements and career-high 309.3 metres gained.
