Richmond has used its first selection in the 2023 Mid-Season Rookie Draft (No. 4 overall) to recruit Glenelg small forward Matthew Coulthard.

Coulthard has shot into AFL list contention in 2023, standing out in his first three SANFL matches for Glenelg since crossing over from local club Port Noarlunga.

The small forward showed his talent with an eye-catching four-goal performance in a low-scoring, wet-weather game against Central District on the weekend.

The 22-year-old is known for his high work rate, speed, and football IQ.

What the Richmond recruiters say about Coulthard...

"A small forward/outside midfielder, Matt has progressed to the Glenelg League team in 2023. Originally recruited from local team Port Noarlunga, he has displayed high work rate, speed and footy IQ to become a dangerous forward option centre forward. His ability to work up the ground, then back to goal at high speed, to the fall of the ball, and impact at the contest, has been a highlight in all his senior football in the SANFL this year.

"Matt's instinctive pressure and defensive qualities have been impressive and something we feel can add great value to our list.

"His ability to impact in the front half through score assists, while also hitting the scoreboard himself, is of high quality. He can create with his hands off the contest, while using his foot skills to set up others around goal. Matt highlighted his improvement with a match-winning four-goal performance at league level last weekend for Glenelg against Central District in heavy conditions.

"Matt will provide a great addition to our front-half group with his goal sense, pressure and aerobic capacity."
