The capacity for Richmond’s defenders to win plenty of ball was further highlighted in last Sunday’s JLT Community Series win against Melbourne at Shepparton.
Veteran rebounding half-back Bachar Houli led the way with 35 disposals (six rebound-50s) in a top-notch display, Jayden Short had 29 (five rebound-50s), Nathan Broad, 23 (five rebound-50s), Alex Rance, 20 (four rebound-50s) and Nick Vlastuin, 18 (four rebound-50s).

Apart from Broad, who averaged 10.0 disposals per game last season, those other Tiger backs were quite prominent on the ball-winning front in 2018. Houli’s average was 21.1, Short’s was 20.0, Rance’s 16.0 and Vlastuin’s 16.6.
It’s a major positive for Richmond to have so many backmen capable of consistently turning defence into attack through their ability to take the game on and rack up disposals.
Also, importantly, the Tigers’ defence has proven how capable it is of significantly negating opposition forwards. This is an area of the game where dependable duo Dylan Grimes and David Astbury really come into their own.
