Former Richmond star players of the 1930s and 1940s, Stan Judkins and Leo Merrett, are the newest inductees into Tigerland’s Hall of Fame.
Judkins and Merrett were inducted at a special pre-game ceremony in the lead-up to yesterday’s Round 20 MCG clash with Brisbane.
Members of their respective families were in attendance to accept the prestigious honour, with Judkins having passed away in 1986 and Merrett in 1976.
Stan Judkins, a small, speedy skilful wingman, played 133 games and kicked five goals for the Tigers in his league career which spanned from 1928-1936.
He became Richmond’s inaugural winner of the competition’s most prestigious individual award, the Brownlow Medal, in 1930.
And Judkins was an impactful dual premiership player with the Club, in 1932, 1934.
Leo Merrett, also a highly-talented wingman, played 170 games and kicked 53 goals for the Tigers in a decade-long career from 1940-1949.
Merrett was a dual Richmond Best and Fairest winner – 1942, 1944 – and a key member of the Club’s 1943 premiership team.
He is a cousin of dual Collingwood premiership wingman Thorold Merrett, two-time Essendon premiership big man Roger Merrett, and the great grandfather of current-day Western Bulldogs young star Bailey Smith.
Richmond Media will provide a more extensive account of the playing careers of Judkins and Merett at Tigerland later this week.
