Dual Richmond premiership star key forward Tom Lynch has been rewarded for his dominant display against Collingwood at the MCG last Saturday with maximum votes in the 2022 AFL Coaches’ Association’s Champion Player of the Year Round 8 voting.
Lynch received 10 votes from respective coaches Damien Hardwick (Richmond) and Craig McRae (Collingwood) for his powerful role in the Tigers’ 27-point win.
He had an AFL career-high 25 disposals, 11 contested possessions, took a game-high 11 marks, including an equal game-high three contested grabs, kicked six goals and also recorded a game-high 14 score involvements.
“He’s got to stop throwing up midfield numbers,” Tigers teammate Trent Cotchin said of Lynch’s performance in a post-game interview with Fox Footy.
“It’s amazing. He’s such a big man, but if we give him an opportunity one-in-one, he’s going to be hard to beat.
“Darcy Moore has been hard to beat and has been for a long period of time, so to do what he did today against quality opposition shows the talent he has.”
Jayden Short’s recent move into Richmond’s midfield is paying big dividends. Short picked up six votes after finishing the match with 27 disposals, 10 contested possessions, six inside-50s, four clearances, four score involvements, five marks and a game-high 708 metres gained.
And Cotchin, himself, also featured in the coaches’ votes again this season. He was given four votes for his strong showing through the midfield – 29 disposals, a game-high 13 contested possessions, eight clearances, four inside-50s, nine score involvements and 374 metres gained.
Noah Balta rounded out Richmond’s Round 8 vote-getters in the prestigious coaches’ award with two votes following his sterling job across the Tigers’ backline.
