In just his fifth game at AFL level, Josh Gibcus was able to demonstrate against reigning premier Melbourne last night just some of the reasons Richmond used its prized top-10 pick on him at last year's AFL national draft.

Gibcus was excellent in the Tigers’ backline, taking an equal game-high 12 marks and having a calm presence down there.

The 19-year-old flies for his marks and backs himself with the ball, and will be a good shot at being the Round 6 AFL Rising Star nominee.

He was certainly a highlight for the Tigers in the big Anzac Day Eve clash.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick acknowledged Gibcus’ progress at the game’s highest level during his post-match press conference.

“He’ll get some good learnings out of it once again,” Hardwick said.

“He’s not shy. He will support the attack, which is a great asset to have.

“He’s got some areas that he can certainly improve on, but for a guy that’s played five games, he’s been a really good contributor for us.”
