The image of Liam Baker, blood streaming down his face after putting his body on the line for the Richmond side during last Saturday night’s clash with Western Bulldogs at the MCG, epitomised the courage and exemplary team-first attitude of the dual premiership Tiger.

Early in the third quarter of the contest, Baker produced a desperate spoil to divert a short pass intended for Bulldogs star skipper Marcus Bontempelli deep in Richmond’s forward line.

The ball subsequently deflected towards Tigers key forward Tom Lynch, who picked it up and ran in to kick a crucial goal.

Baker had copped a nasty cut as a result of his gallantry that caused an outpouring of blood. But that was nothing compared to the outpouring of admiration and affection he received from teammates and the Tiger Army.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick lauded Baker during his post-match press conference.

“Bakes is one of those guys you wish you had five more of, the way he plays the game,” Hardwick said.

“There was another bit of play where he tapped it, where he was outnumbered one v two.

“We’re fortunate that he got overlooked in a couple of drafts.

“He’s just become such an important player for us, both on and off the field.

“He makes the hard looks easy at times.

“He’s a really important player to us and I enjoyed his game tonight.”

Baker finished the match with 17 disposals, five inside-50s, five marks, three intercepts, seven score involvements and 390 metres gained.
