Robust Richmond triple premiership ruckman Toby Nankervis is the first wearer of the No. 25 guernsey in Tigerland history to be appointed captain of the Club.
Current Tigers CEO Brendon Gale, who also wore the No. 25, filled in as skipper several times during the mid-1990s, while 1967 premiership ruckman Mike Patterson did it on a couple of occasions in the 1960s.
Nankervis also is just the second Tasmanian to take the captaincy reins at Punt Road on a full-time basis.
Richmond ‘Immortal’ Royce Hart, recruited from Tasmanian club Clarence, captained the Club for four seasons, from 1972-75, which included the back-to-back premiership triumphs of 1974-75.
Interestingly, Nankervis (from Tassie club North Launceston) has played exactly the same number of games for the Tigers as Trent Cotchin had when he became the Club’s permanent captain (in 2013) – 86. Nankervis also had a 12-game stint with the Sydney Swans before joining Richmond.
Meanwhile, Dylan Grimes, the Tigers’ other new co-captain, will be just the third captain of the Club to wear the No. 2 guernsey.
Ted Ohlson, in 1912 and dual Brownlow Medallist Roy Wright, were the other players to wear No. 2 as permanent Richmond captains.
