In the fourth part of a special 1971 Richmond Annual Report flashback series leading into the Club’s 2021 Annual General Meeting on Monday, we reproduce then president, Al Boord’s, review of the ’71 season.

“Everyone associated with the Club must have been greatly disappointed with the outcome of the Season, particularly as we had become hot favourites for the flag, but nevertheless it will be appreciated that the Club had a successful year.

For each of our teams to finish in the Final Four was a splendid achievement. My congratulations go to each of the Coaches, and particularly to Tom Hafey for the senior team making “the Four” after appearing to be in a hopeless position mid-way through the season, and to Verdun Howell for winning the Reserve Grade Premiership.

Our capable and diligent Secretary, Alan Schwab, again carried out his duties in a most efficient manner, and also did all required of him as the Club’s representative at the Victorian Football League.

Once again we must extend our sincere thanks to the members of the Business Men’s Coterie for their great financial support and their assistance in placing many of our players in suitable employment.

To Miss Alice Wills and members of the Supporters’ Group and Cheer Squad we also say a sincere “Thank You”.

Their efforts have been magnificent and these groups have contributed very greatly to the successful operation of the Club. We look forward to their continued support.

During the season, discussions were held with the Richmond Cricket Club regarding the state of the Richmond Oval, and as a result a decision was made to undertake major drainage and re-grading work. This work was carried out at the end of the playing season under the guidance and supervision of our Treasurer, ex-Senator Pat Kennelly who, in his capacity as Chairman of the Albert Park Trust, is most experienced in this work. We are greatly indebted to him and extend sincere thanks. We are also appreciative of the co-operation of the Cricket Club President, Nelson Cox, and his Committee in agreeing to sacrifice the benefits of playing home ground matches until the oval is ready.

We believe the outcome will be of tremendous benefit to our players in their being able to train in 1972 on a good well-drained surface instead of the “mud heap” they have had to put up with in recent years.

Our hopes are high for 1972, and I appeal to everyone for their unqualified support of the Club and also of Tom Hafey who again will be the senior coach next year.” -- A. E. BOORD, President.
