The four Western Australian members of Richmond’s 2019 premiership side – Nathan Broad (Swan Districts), Shai Bolton (South Fremantle), Liam Baker (West Perth and Subiaco) and Marlion Pickett (South Fremantle) – were the equal-most number of players recruited from the same state in the Tigers’ flag-winning history.
You have to go back to 1973 for the only other time a Richmond premiership line-up contained as many interstate players from the one state.
In that instance, it was four Tasmanian Tigers – Royce Hart (Clarence), Ian Stewart (Hobart), Paul Sproule (Hobart) and Noel Carter (Ulverstone).
Richmond’s triumphant 1943 team had three South Australians in it – Jack Broadstock (West Adelaide), Laurie Cahill (South Adelaide) and Ray Hunt (Glenelg and West Adelaide).
There were three players from WA in the Tigers’ drought-breaking 2017 premiership side – Broad, Alex Rance (Swan Districts) and Kamdyn McIntosh (Peel Thunder).
And two Sandgropers were part of the Richmond line-up that crushed Collingwood in the 1980 Grand Final – captain Bruce Monteath (South Fremantle) and Rob Wiley (Perth).
