To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Tigers’ 1974 premiership, Richmond Media has been transporting Yellow and Black barrackers back in time throughout 2024 to follow the Punt Road path to that tremendous triumph. We take a look today at Kevin Barlett’s post-season scooping of key individual awards at Tigerland.

Kevin Bartlett capped off a superb 1974 season by winning Richmond’s Best and Fairest award.

It was a fourth Jack Dyer Medal for Bartlett and his second in-a-row.

The champion rover was a runaway winner this year, polling 237 votes, which was 64 more than runner-up Francis Bourke, with Kevin Sheedy a further 40 votes behind in third place.

The top 10 vote-getters in the 1974 Jack Dyer Medal were:

1st – Kevin Bartlett, 237 votes

2nd – Francis Bourke, 173 votes

3rd – Kevin Sheedy, 133 votes

4th – Bryan Wood, 105

5th – Royce Hart, 101

6th – Paul Sproule, 89

7th – Robert McGhie, 88

8th – Dick Clay, 61

9th – Neil Balme, 35

10th – Gareth Andrews, 33

Bartlett also won the Tigers’ leading goalkicker award for the first time, with 47 goals.

He kicked multiple goals in a game 11 times throughout the season, with a best return of six against South Melbourne in Round 10 at the Lake Oval, and six v Fitzroy, Round 13, VFL Park.
