Rhyan Mansell undoubtedly was one of the success stories for Richmond in the 2024 season.
The 24-year-old, tenacious small forward averaged a goal a game (21 in total) and was ranked No. 8 in the competition for tackles inside 50, highlighting the intense pressure he applies to the opposition’s defenders.
“I feel like I had a pretty consistent year. Going into the year I wanted to cement a spot in the senior team and I feel like I accomplished that,” Mansell told Richmond Media.
“My confidence has grown a lot.
“That’s probably the main difference this year compared to the last two or three years . . . my confidence at AFL level and impacting at AFL level.”
Although Mansell managed to hit the scoreboard on a consistent basis throughout the season, that wasn’t a specific focus for him in his role within the Tigers’ line-up.
“Getting on the end of a couple is ideal for a small forward, but I just want to play my role for the team and be the best team player I can,” he said.
Mansell believes his biggest growth has been from a leadership perspective.
“With ‘Lynchy’ (Tom Lynch) going down, it felt like we didn’t have very much experience up forward. So, I sort of took that in my hands,” he said.
“I thought I led the forward line pretty well in meetings off-field. And then, on-field, I just felt I played my role well this year and was consistent at it.”
Although Mansell took some significant strides in his football development this season, he is seeking further improvement next year.
“I think every part of my game I can work on,” he said.
“I can work on my aerial game, take a few more marks. Fitness . . . get up the ground a bit more. Hopefully, get a little bit of a run in the middle at times.
“I want to come back stronger and hungrier next year . . . Hopefully we get a few more wins.
“Looking forward to next year.”
